Description

Why I picked this watch: I hand-selected this 1953 Rolex Oyster because it represents the ‘Golden Era’ of Rolex engineering. The Reference 6244 is a fascinating transitional piece; finding an example from the early 50s that retains such an honest, uniform patina is increasingly rare. I chose this specific watch for its purity—it hasn’t been over-restored, preserving the sharp lines and tool-watch DNA that collectors demand. It’s a masterclass in mid-century horology that feels as relevant today as it did 70 years ago.

ROLEX Oyster vintage watch, reference 6244, with in-house 710 movement, Swiss made in 1953 (according to its serial number), case of 32 mm without the crown, hand-wound (mechanical, no battery!), working fine and fully serviced.

Rolex, the world’s most recognized watch brand, was founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf in London, later moving its operations to Geneva in 1919. Rolex built its legendary status on the “Oyster” waterproof case, defining the modern watch.

Caliber 710 is a cornerstone of Rolex’s mid-century manual-wind production. It introduced a central sweep seconds hand, reflecting the shifting aesthetic of the era toward a more modern, “clean” dial layout. It was a remarkably slim and robust movement for its time, featuring 15 jewels and the patented Super-Balance hairspring. Despite Rolex being famous for its “Perpetual” (automatic) movements, the Caliber 710 remained the heart of many essential Oyster models for those who preferred the ritual of a daily wind.

Reference 6244 is a classic “Oyster” model from the early 1950s. It is highly prized by vintage collectors for its transitional design—it sits between the older “Bubbleback” era and the modern Oyster Perpetuals we recognize today.

This timepiece features a stainless steel case with light scuffs and scratches commensurate with its age, original signed Twinlock crown, and original unrestored dial and hands – please check the photos. The glass is possibly a later replacement. The inner caseback shows some old watchmaker marks. The watch also features a new Hirsch brown leather strap. It will fit wrists of up to 21 cm. Water resistance has not been tested, therefore it must be treated as NON-waterproof.

The watch will be delivered in its own Rolex presentation box, for a better protection during transportation and for a smart and safe storing once you receive it. The box surface is quite damaged as seen in the pictures.

A printed Certificate of Authenticity will be provided with all relevant information.

As with any other vintage mechanical watch, exact accuracy cannot be guaranteed, as it depends on many factors, including your kind of use. It has been regulated in different positions to minimize the average time gain/loss. The watch has been fully serviced recently.

FREE registered (tracked) shipment worldwide. VAT is included in the price (European Union). USA buyers: the price includes shipping, tariffs and custom duties.
